Catalysto wins Bronze Award at ICAD Awards for its creative work for the Institute of Art Design & Technology (IADT).

Catalysto was awarded a bronze bell (the highest award given in the category) for its work on the IADT 2012/2013 collateral.

Appointed by IADT in 2012, Catalysto was tasked with strengthening and re-positioning the IADT brand through a complete overhaul of the institute’s extensive range of printed brochures, catalogues, prospectuses, handbooks and more.

The resulting materials have been widely commented upon and appreciated throughout the creative industry and beyond. The awarded collateral is the ‘opening statement’ in the campaign which will develop over three years.

Founded in 1958, ICAD is a non-profit, membership led body ‘made up of the best creatives in Ireland’. ICAD’s primary aim is ‘to foster, promote and reward creative excellence in Irish Advertising & Design’.

“We are very appreciative of the opportunity afforded to us by IADT. They are, in every respect, an excellent client, with a very clear vision – IADT is a fundamentally important institution providing the Irish creative industry with exceptional highly skilled talent. The Institute of Art Design & Technology (IADT) is the only educational institution recognized at this year’s ICAD Awards.” (Garrett Stokes, Partner/Creative Director, Catalysto).

In denial about Climate Change?

Dublin born Jon Berkeley created this illustration for the launch issue of 2050 magazine – a new publishing venture dealing with renewable energy. The publishers intend to attract crowd funding with their launch issue – check it out here.

“while 99.99% of independent scientific opinion believes that our accelerated CO2 emissions over the last 50 years are the direct cause of global warming, which, if left unchecked much longer, will see 20% of the world’s land mass submerged in seawater by the year 2050, only 35% of the general public believes them.”

Jon Berkeley has worked as a freelance illustrator for a quarter of a century and more recently has taken to writing. He is the author and illustrator of Chopsticks, a story about the friendship between a mouse and a dragon, and is the author of the Wednesday Tales series—The Palace of Laughter, The Tiger’s Egg, and The Lightning Key. His illustrations have appeared on the covers of The Washington Post, The Sunday Times, Time Magazine, The Economist, The Global Legal Post, The LA Times and many other prestigious magazines.

The winners of the Design Business Ireland Irish Design Effectiveness Awards (IDEA) 2011 have been announced

The Design Business Ireland awards are unique in Ireland. The brief for the jury is to identify and reward the entry that was the most effective piece of design and delivered tangible, measurable economic benefits to the client – that’s why we call them the Irish Design Effectiveness Awards (IDEA)! The IDEA Awards reward designers who worked hard to produce solutions that worked hard for their client and unlike other design awards the design agency and the client both receive an award – as both are acknowledged as co-creators.

The IDEA Award Grand Prix 2011 was awarded to The Brand Union for their work on Glenilen Farm rebranding. Glenilen Farm is a family-run dairy farm in the heart of West Cork, Ireland, producing a range of delicious products using highest quality ingredients.

The Jury deliberated…

The Design Business Ireland awards are unique in Ireland. The brief for the jury is to identify and reward the entry that was the most effective piece of design and delivered tangible, measurable economic benefits to the client – that’s why we called them the Irish Design Effectiveness Awards (IDEA)!

This year we had a highly effective jury, fair but critical, open but focussed, impartial but demanding … the jury members for IDEA Awards 2011 were:

Christopher O’Shaughnessy, who recently stepped down as Creative Director Design, JWT Canada in order to return to Dublin;
Grainne Millar, Temple Bar Cultural Trust, responsible for leading the development and implementation of a diverse and inclusive cultural programme for Dublin’s Cultural Quarter;
Niall Leavy, an experienced organisational psychologist, executive coach and senior manager in the public service, currently on secondment with the Central Bank;
Anthony Collins, Founder and CEO of Directski.com (one of Europe’s leading online ski holiday companies);
Eddie Shanahan, well known for his leadership role in the retail sector particularly with Arnotts, runs his own management consultancy covering branding, retailing, fashion & homewares. He lists leading Irish and international designers, retailers, media and blue chip companies among his clients and serves as Chairperson at the Council of Irish Fashion Designers [CIFD].

The board and members of Design Business Ireland are very grateful for the services the judges provided.

DBI launches a member’s endorsement identity

Design Business Ireland is the national professional organisation that promotes and strengthens the design sector in Ireland by bringing together Business, Education, Government and Design. DBI helps create conditions where professional excellence can flourish and where mutually beneficial partnerships are nurtured between the design community, its clients and stakeholders.

As part of its commitment to playing a pivotal role in the development of the Design Industry in Ireland Design Business Ireland has launched a Members Endorsement Identity.

DBI-Chartered_logo

DBI recommends that members use this visual device on stationery, websites, email and other collateral including Tender Response Documents. It is a marque that will add credibility and over time, as we increasingly communicate the benefits that clients can achieve by appointing DBI members, its use will deliver tangible benefits to members of DBI. Its widespread use will communicate our collective belief that good design is effective – it delivers a positive return on investment.

Against a backdrop where significant design projects are being commissioned from overseas design practices by both the state and private sector it is also becoming essential to communicate that Design Business Ireland members are as proficient, dependable and creative as their overseas counterparts and are committed to improving their professional standing. Members who are active on overseas markets will find that membership of recognised professional organisations is often expected and always respected.

Through the use of the endorsement identity DBI intends:
• To considerably increase the visibility of DBI through the use of the mark on member’s stationery, websites, emails and other collateral and on tender documents;
• To provide, by increasing the organisation’s visibility, a platform for Design Business Ireland to promote the aims of the organisation and its members;
• To identify to the client community (over time as recognition grows) that DBI members are skilled, dependable professionals who adhere to industry standards;
• To create recognition and encourage collaboration between member companies as a result of mutual respect between members;
• To encourage design companies that are not currently members to join and help create a stronger DBI capable of helping members face the challenges of the current economic climate;
• To clearly identify design companies who, through membership of their industry’s professional organisation, are focussed, involved, active and who aspire towards the highest professional standards.

The Members Endorsement Identity is in two forms: Chartered Member and Associate Member, to reflect the two membership categories in the organisation. Chartered membership is available to design practices who have been members of DBI for more than a year and Associate membership is available for design companies wishing to join DBI.

Coming to your senses

Is Multisensory design the new outer limit? … we design for the eyes, the ears, the nose, the tongue and for our other senses – balance, body awareness and temperature. Usually our design solutions engage at most two senses. The term multi-media is a bit of an exaggeration or at least an overstatement … sure it may include a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video and perhaps interactivity – but so what? Multi-media only engages two senses – sight and hearing. What if we could design in a manner that engages, stimulates or ‘triggers’ more than two senses? We could call it sensational … its actually called Multi-sensory Design.

When design was a child of the early human imagination it was simple but it was serious too … it was about survival. Early designers were of the ‘product design’ variety – creating new tools for defence, new tools for hunting, new tools for gathering and for farming. Design was also about fun – finding ways of changing the human body by painting it, or adorning the body with decorations, altering the body with piercings and other embellishments (including perfume) – these were the early fashion designers. Early graphic designers painted the walls of caves with instructional or entertaining images. These days of course, like everything else, Design has grown up. Design itself is still about simplicity but the context in which we experience it and deliver it is becoming increasingly complex.

Humans began by designing small hand held devices made from flint, now we concern ourselves with designing complex cities to house millions of people. We ‘design-think’ across all spheres of human activity, usually trying to improve the human condition. Not content with design as a single overarching term, we have made it many things: we have design thinking, service design, design management, product design, information design, experience design and interaction design and more. These terms describe what we are delivering – what happens if we look at how design is experienced?

The MSD Group is a new project led by Cearbhall O’Meadhra, Visiting Research Fellow at the NCAD. MSD Group invites designers and users alike to join in discussion of their newly discovered paradigm of “Sensory Modal Switching” … it is “the mechanism that people use to explore the sensory aspects of a design and create a Multisensory Response Pattern. Focusing on the definition of the design message has led to a unique discovery regarding the way in which stakeholders experience products”. In their first discussion paper MSD Group presents multisensory processing, layering in memory and sensory modal switching as the essential processes involved in multisensory perception. MSD Group claim their “new approach will ensure a greater understanding of why and how designers should deliver a more complete design message. MSD Group would like to hear your response to their ideas.
